#wingclipping For those who are interested, birds need their wings for exercise and overall health. As their wings are directly connected to their cardiovascular system, Birds have nine air sacs: two cervical, an unpaired clavicular, two cranial thoracic, two caudal thoracic, and two abdominal air sacs. The air sacs are thin-walled structures composed of simple squamous epithelium covering a thin layer of connective tissue with very few blood vessels (McLelland, 1989b). and the flapping of their wings when flying forces the air through the body so that their bodies can absorb the air into their bloodstreams, which is essential for good health and life.
These air bags allow for continuous breathing, but they also play a role in thermal regulation.
Birds have One-way airflow and continuous oxygenation
Unlike mammals, parrots don't have a diaphragm. Their breathing depends on the movements of the sternum and thoracic muscles generated by fapping of wings during flight:
During inspiration, fresh air enters the posterior airbags, and some of it goes directly into the lungs.
Upon expiration, air from the rear bags passes into the lungs for additional gas exchange, while worn air is expelled by the anterior airbags.
This system provides constant oxygenation and is one of the most effective in the animal kingdom. However, it also makes parrots extremely vulnerable to toxins hanging in the air.
So, really, at the end of the day, are birds' wings being clipped for their health and well-being or for human security and convenience rather than for the best interest of the bird and its health.
Some simple thoughts and measures, like fly strips, a curtain over the doorways, and some tape on the windows, till they get used to their unfamiliar environment, can make an enormous difference.

The Heartwarming Journey of Louise and Her First Baby
A Story of Hope and Motherhood
Louise came into our lives when she was just 12 years old, As a boy, we were told. Little did we know that this sweet creature would soon reveal herself as a devoted and loving mother. At 14, Louise laid her first clutch of eggs. Despite being a single hen and knowing deep down that the eggs weren't fertile, she nurtured them with such dedication, chatting to them non-stop. It was clear that she yearned to be a mother.
After realizing her eggs would never hatch, Louise didn't give up. She laid another clutch almost immediately, her maternal instincts pushing her forward. We wanted to fulfill her dreams, so we decided to intervene in the most heartwarming way possible. We carefully swapped a fertile egg from another pair of Sun Conures and placed it under Louise.
Her joy was palpable when that egg finally hatched. She proudly showed us her baby, the realization of her deepest wish. Louise was an exemplary mother, raising her little one to be fully weaned. Her excitement was contagious, and she often sought our help when she felt she needed an extra hand with feeding.
Louise's journey is a testament to the power of love and the lengths one will go to nurture and protect one's dreams. She showed us what true dedication looks like, and her story continued to inspire us every day.

We see many posts where people are scared to introduce new birds together. All birds have a pecking order they need to establish. Usually, if given the opportunity, they will sort it out quite quickly. We have never introduced a new pairing that didn’t get along within a short time. This pair had never seen each other before and had only been together for about 20 minutes. The longest it's taken is a week for some over-humanised birds we’ve acquired. It’s all about how they’ve been introduced and ensuring a neutral environment where neither bird feels it owns the space.

Our Mealworm Farm for our Birds and more :)
We started our farm almost a year ago with just 2 kg of mealworms at the end of February last year, so it was not quite a year ago. We had a bit of a teething problem when we started starting but quickly sorted that and discovered having a heat source through the colder months was well and truly beneficial to their production amounts,
We have 4 large tubs of beetles that we take the beetles out every 2 weeks and have them staggered, so we swap out 2 tubs every week to have a steady supply of Mealworms. At the moment, they are producing 5-6 kg of medium worms a week :)

3 little baby Pied Sun Conures. From the first one that hatched until the third one was 3 days old, they went through some really hot days just after hatching, too, with sprinklers going to keep them all a bit cooler.

Some of our green cheek conures enjoy some live mealworms. Three days ago, we put a bowl of live mealworms in with them, and there was not any interest in food that moved, lol. Then, two days ago, we offered them singerly by hand and still and still food that moved was not for them, it seemed, lol,
So we offered them some fresh dead ones that were a hit, and then some live ones again that they took to from the hand.
Then, today, we offered them a bowl of live ones. There was no stopping them.
Persistence is key to any new thing, whether it be food or a new toy or box, and offer it in different ways and be creative #mealworms #mealworms

Half an hour before I took this video, they had not seen a mealworm before, or I should say only once before. Our birds got a new watering system for Christmas.
It has always been a fully automatic system. The piping was getting old and needed to be all redesigned, and now it is much easier to flush to Bowles, and everyone has its own individual tap now as well.

A Book we ordered a few weeks ago turned up this morning. This is to add to our medical and husbandry avian book collection. It looks to be very interesting and informative. We have always been interested in learning and understanding more about our little feathered family

A Book we ordered a few weeks ago turned up this morning. This is to add to our medical and husbandry avian book collection. It looks to be very interesting and informative. We have always been interested in learning and understanding more about our little feathered family

I have been exploring ideas for new feeders to reduce waste for our indoor birds, which will also work for our outdoor aviaries. We trialed this designs over a week, and they didn't take long to test it. We have used them with Green Cheek Conures, Sun Conures, Caiques, and Amazons, but with the Amazons, we made a larger feed hole.

Previously, with the plastic oblong feeders and S/S dishes, the birds would scatter the food everywhere, with most of it ending up on the floor or bottom of the cage, which led to it being thrown away. This was frustrating, as we were constantly trying to keep their food supply up, not to mention how costly it was.

Now, with our new design, what used to last only a day or two now lasts over a week, saving us time and money. So far, We have made over 30 of these feeders, and I can confidently say we are extremely happy with the results!

Previously, with the plastic oblong feeders and S/S dishes, the birds would scatter the food everywhere, with most of it ending up on the floor or bottom of the cage, which led to it being thrown away. This was frustrating, as we were constantly trying to keep their food supply up, not to mention how costly it was.

Now, with our new design, what used to last only a day or two now lasts over a week, saving us time and money. So far, We have made over 30 of these feeders, and I can confidently say we are extremely happy with the results!
